Archives Identifier00291Date Range1970-1990DescriptionThis series consists of negatives created as part of a continuous photographic documentation by a number of Wellington City Council photographers from January 1953 until 1990. Subjects include Council functions, buildings of architectural interest, construction work, plumbing and drainage work, the interior of derelict buildings, sub-standard dwellings, parks and reserves, zoo activities, machinery, exhibitions, staff and Councillors, and other topics relating to Council activities.
While the series is continuous it is characterised by changes in photographer, style, predominant subject matter, filing format, indexing systems and film format. Frank Clark was the first ‘City Photographer', employed between 1970 to 1981. Subsequent City Photographers were Carol Knox and Karen Angus. Neil Price filled the role from 1987.
Formats include: 35mm negatives; 120mm film (not as common); mounted transparencies (minimal prior to 1987); from 1987 proofs/contact prints may be included; notes on assignment may be included; and both colour and B/W (may be indicated on envelope from 1987).

From Box 20, job numbers begin to appear and from box 20 item 155 a new job number sequence begins starting at 1. A number of empty envelopes were removed from boxes 1, 18, 20-26 while checking the series (see 11025169) so the numbering within these boxes is no longer consecurive. The list should be treated with some caution as it contains a number of errors in street and personal names etc.Collection TypeWellington City Council
