Waripori Street was likely a misspelling of Te Wharepōuri who was a Te Ati Awa warrior and chief. Te Wharepōuri’s life was significant in many ways and there are many stories that could be told. Te Wharepōuri was a very pivotal person in Wellington’s history during the time of early European settlement as he was involved with early negotiations with the New Zealand Company when they arrived here in 1839. In 1840, he signed the Treaty of Waitangi in Wellington Harbour.

Te Wharepōuri was known as Te Kakapi-o-te-rangi in his youth. He was the son of Hine-i-te-uru senior wife of Te Whiti-o-Rongomai II and he belonged to the Ngāti Tāwhirikura and Ngāti Te Whiti hapū of Te Ātiawa. He was probably born just before 1800.

Te Wharepōuri lived through some very tumultuous times in which he was a chief and warrior. In his early life in Taranaki he experienced a lot of conflict associated with the musket wars. In 1828, while living in Taranaki, he persuaded Jacky Love and his mate, Dicky Barrett, to set up their trading post at Ngāmoto near New Plymouth. He and his cousin, Te Puni, travelled in Barrett’s schooner to Sydney where they purchased muskets and powder for further defence against invasion from the Waikato. In 1832 after further invasion and conflict Te Wharepōuri led the migration of Te Ātiawa known as Tama-te-uaua which eventually led them to Wellington.

Te Wharepōuri was living at Ngāūranga when the New Zealand Company ship Tory arrived. He and Te Puni were involved in the negotiations with William Wakefield involving the land around Wellington. The term “sale” is a bit of a dispute as, like many rangatira of the time, Te Wharepōuri did not fully understand the English notion of property rights. Te Wharepōuri saw the deal as a way to bring peace and security to his people. He expected a small trading post of Europeans, not the vast migration of settlers that resulted. Te Wharepouri would later say that he had thought the land sale was a deal for anchorage rights and the ability to trade.
